BIOTECH DAILY’S TOP 40
Most of the Biotech Top 40 increased in market capitalization in October with 22 companies rising at much greater rates than the 12 that fell. Six were unchanged.
Metabolic climbed by 79 percent for the month from $122 million to $216 million. Metabolic was as high as $2.20 a share in a brief spike in late 2004, falling as low as 38 cents in recent months. The positive announcements-led recovery puts Metabolic at about its eight year average (see Biotech Daily October 17, 2006).
Bionomics climbed 57 percent to $33 million; followed by Proteome up 39 percent to $46 million; Starpharma up 38 percent to $98 million; Pharmaxis up 28 percent to $510 million; Sirtex and Portland up 27 percent for the month to $163 million and $56 million respectively; with Progen and Cygenics up 19 percent to $142 million and $25 million respectively.
Just outside the Top 40 Apollo Life was up 21 percent to $29 million, Benitec recovered 200 percent from $5 million to $15 million, with IM Medical up 29 percent to $17 million.
The worst fall among Top 40 stocks was Phylogica’s 17 percent fall to $24 million, less than half of its April market capitalization and Novogen’s 14 percent slide to $260 million less than half the value of one year ago. Clinical Cell and Living Cell fell 14 and 12 percent respectively.
All three big caps climbed with Cochlear hitting a record high above $3.0 billion.
Eleven Top 20 stocks were up and eight fell over the month, with 11 of the Second 20 up and four down.
The Top 40 remains unchanged with Gropep expected to depart the ASX later this month. Stem Cell Sciences has been mentioned as possibly listing on the ASX in the not too distant future, with Apollo Life, IM Medical, Xceed Biotechnology, Biopharmica, Antisense and Sunshine Heart all worthy of promotion.
