BONE MEDICAL
Bone Medical says new data shows an increased level above baseline of oral parathyroid hormone in blood comparable to injectable parathyroid hormone and above placebo.
Bone said the results came from testing its oral parathyroid hormone Capthymone osteoporosis product in a second clinical trial conducted at Qpharm in Brisbane.
Bone has previously said that increases in plasma calcium were seen in subjects treated with Capthymone containing 400µg or 800µg of parathyroid hormone 1-34 fragment equivalent to those seen for Eli Lilly’s Forteo, comprising a dose of 20µg of parathyroid hormone 1-34 fragment injected subcutaneously (see Biotech Daily; February 1, 2008).
The increases in calcium demonstrated that parathyroid hormone was entering the bloodstream via the oral route and exerting a biological effect, Bone said.
Bone said the findings were backed up by further analyses, showing that increases above baseline of parathyroid hormone fragments can be seen in the bloodstream shortly after administration of Capthymone.
The increases seen are comparable to those measured for injectable parathyroid hormone 1-34, during Bone’s first clinical trial, while placebo levels in the same trial stayed close to baseline.
The company said Capthymone complemented Bone’s Capsitonin (oral calcitonin), which has had “encouraging results” in phase IIb clinical trials.
Calcitonin targets osteoclasts, preventing them from breaking bone down, while parathyroid hormone up-regulates osteoblasts, whose role is to build new bone.
Bone said Calcitonin was available as an injectable and nasally administered product and was indicated for early stages of osteoporosis, while injectable parathyroid hormone was used in the later stages of osteoporosis, when the condition could be severe.
Bone chairman Dr Roger New said the availability of oral forms of these drugs would be “very pleasing news for osteoporosis sufferers”.
“The drugs are natural hormones of the body and oral drug forms will markedly increase the numbers of patients who use them,” Dr New said.
Bone climbed four cents or 16.67 percent to 28 cents.
