Compumedics is preparing to market its sleep diagnostics equipment to the $20-30 million a year home evaluation market.
Compumedics said that on March 14 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services allowed reimbursement for home sleep-testing in the evaluation of patients who may benefit from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
The company said the move “presents an explosive growth opportunity for Compumedics which manufactures a most comprehensive range of laboratory (Class 1) to home based (Class 4) sleep diagnostic systems”.
Compumedics chief executive officer David Burton told Biotech Daily that his company has a direct sleep force in the US of 50 sales and marketing people based in Charlotte North Carolina and was contracting a larger scale partner to distribute the Somté family of home sleep diagnostic devices.
Mr Burton said the Somté Somnia device would cost about $2-3,000 per unit and would be supplied to gerneal practitioners and clinics through health and medical organizations.
“There are about 13-18 million people with obstructive sleep apnoea who are undiagnosed, let alone the patients who need treatment,” Mr Burton said.
He said the home use Somté Somnia device was “compatible with the data analyses of the top end equipment while being available at the lowest price”.
Compumedics was untraded at 17.5 cents.
